We all know that accountants are pretty helpful when it comes to filing tax returns for companies and keeping an eye on the money. But they can do so much more for a small business, asserts Orlando Business Accountant Pauline Ho.

During an interview, the Founder of Laus Consulting Services LLC listed several responsibilities that an accountant can undertake in a business to help propel it to future success.

"Hiring a professional and experienced accountant and CPA is rapidly becoming a must-do for small businesses and start-ups looking to the long-term," discloses Ho.

One of the many jobs an accountant can do is develop a financial eco-system, or infrastructure, for a small business. These can range from accounting software integration recommendations, overheads analysis, and compliance and give guidance on how to improve the financial state of the business.

"The main aim is to free up the company owner from getting bogged down in the numbers and financial elements of the business and allow them to do what they are good at – running the business effectively from the front," she added.

Accountants can ease the strain of a growing business by managing the finances and keeping an eye on cash flow. This can often lead them to advise business owners on a strategic action plan. For example, an accountant can assess where expenses and overheads are leaving the company and put in place an effective plan to rein in spending.

She added: "A good accountant keeps in regular communication with business owners, so they know if you are making a profit or the steps needed to avert a loss and turn that back around."

An accountant typically manages the annual reports for a business, prepares overviews of finances to allow an owner to make accurate decisions, as well as handling the dread tax data.

Ho emphasized: "While accountants ensure a company stays within the financial regulations, they can also be very helpful with advice when a business owner is considering taking out business loans and the impact they will have on the company.’’

"Small business owners may want to monitor cash flow during a particular time of the year, and an accountant will be best placed to come back with their conclusions and review of that period. It may be enormously helpful to the functioning of a business if it is in a seasonal industry."

She added: "These reports allow you to see how variances occur or other trends that can impact your company's profitability." An accountant can also offer advice such as if another business bank account is needed, the need to improve payroll procedures or how to maintain financial growth.

They can also keep track of inventory if there's a suspicion that it is disappearing and if customers are not paying on time. "For the latter, this is extremely important for a business's cash flow," she said.

They can also advise where the business could grow further by analyzing pricing and cash flow patterns and how to effectively manage the debt you may have by sourcing the least expensive borrowing strategies.

She said: "They can also play an important role in hiring key personnel, whether that be more salespeople or other employees to boost your business. They will also be able to work the cost of hiring and training employees and keep the payroll on track."

Ho concluded: "More than anything, an accountant can make a business efficient, agile and act rapidly changing times and trends in an industry for a business owner. Ultimately, they can help an entrepreneur unlock the future potential of their business."
