“Sit up straight!” “Don’t slouch!”
Do you often convey these warning verbal messages, albeit with good intention to your child when they are not having a proper sitting position at their study desk with their back straight? And most of the time, they would roll their eyes and as soon as you walked away they would slump back over in a hunch. You are not just purely annoyed by how they are standing or sitting but there is that one important health reason that leads you to feel mad and helpless. But did you teach them the correct sitting posture and explain the importance of good posture patiently to your child?
What is good posture anyway and why is it so important? Basically, good posture definition refers to the body’s alignment and positioning with respect to the ever-present force of gravity. Whether we are standing, sitting or lying down gravity exerts a force on our joints, ligaments and muscles. Good posture entails distributing the force of gravity through our body so no one structure is overstressed.
___Here are examples of incorrect postures which you could show to your kids:___
☓ Improper reading distance that causes short-sightedness.
☓ Slouching that results in hunchback and scoliosis problems.
☓ Hips not resting on the seat and feet off the ground, children get tired and lose focus easily.
☓ NO suitable desk can be used for writing, reading and drawing.
☓ Unable to adjust table height for children of different age and height, resulting in unhealthy sitting posture.
As responsible parents or caretakers, instilling good practice of having the correct sitting posture in your kids is essential as eventually, their postures affect how they walk, run, jump, lift weights and execute other skills. Because of its many benefits, such as ease of movement, good balance of muscle strength and flexibility, proper positioning of the spine and proper functioning of internal organs, their body “feels” good and they, therefore, feel good!
___Here’s why assuming the correct sitting posture is important:____
✔ Minimises eye strain and reduces vision problems.
✔ Supports the healthy development of child’s spine, minimizes the risk of hunchback
and scoliosis.
✔ With both feet firmly on the ground, the child’s blood circulation and focus will improve
focus.
✔ Multifunctional table design ideal for writing, reading and drawing.
✔ Adjustable height of study desk that helps to save time and money.
