At 12:06 on June 5, 2019, CZ-11 Solid-fuel Space Launch Vehicle (CZ-11 WEY) fulfils China’s first sea launch mission on the Yellow Sea and sends seven commercial satellites into the preset orbit, making China one of the few countries capable of seaborne rocket launch. In addition, CZ-11 WEY, as the first launch vehicle jointly named by CASC and a corporate brand, symbolizes a new breakthrough in the business model of China’s aerospace industry. In conjunction with this launch, the Joint Technology Innovation Center, jointly set up by CASC and WEY, makes steady progress in the integration plan for four science and technology segments to accelerate the civil use of China’s aerospace technology, which is of great strategic significance for China.

The superiority of CASC in quality system and testing will empower automobile manufacturing quality system of WEY in terms of design, management and system. In the field of autonomous driving technology, the control system of CZ-11 Space Launch Vehicle has entered the stage of “Smart Launch Vehicle” so that orbit can be automatically preset. Its five modules: Perception and Understanding Module, Planning and Decision-Making Module, Learning and Adaptation Module, Motion and Control Module and Communication and Collaboration Module will provide technological support for autonomous driving of WEY and afford good opportunities to change track and overtake the foreign brands.

Materials application is also a top priority in bilateral cooperation. The launch vehicle up to sea launch standard boasts unique advantages in moisture resistance and corrosion resistance, which will help WEY design more durable and safer materials. Moreover, both parties will carry out technological intercommunication in terms of weight reduction, energy saving and NVH to bring greater improvement in vehicle materials innovation and muting engineering. In addition, in the field of hydrogen energy, WEY, as a technology forerunner among Chinese brands, has an independent hydrogen energy research and development system to demonstrates technological achievements such as fuel cells, power reactors, and hydrogen tanks. It has also built a hydrogen experiment center in Baoding, Hebei Province. CZ-5 Space Launch Vehicle has a well-established hydrogen-oxygen engine system, which will strongly underpin automotive hydrogen energy research and development at the technological dimension.

At present, China enjoys enormous market scale and broad space in the civil use of aerospace technology. WEY’s partnership with CASC is just seizing this excellent policy and market opportunity. It is reported that CASC and WEY will continue strategic cooperation in advancing independent innovation for a win-win situation. They will make due contributions to China’s growing into an aerospace power and an industrial power, and showcase the brilliant demeanor of China’s power.
