An estimated 700,000 patients undergo elective LASIK surgery in the United States every year. Of these 700,000 surgeries, over 95% are deemed successful, making LASIK one of the safest and most reliable vision correction treatments available today.
LASIK surgery involves using lasers to correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The surgeon starts by creating a flap in the cornea, which is then folded back on a small hinge. With it held back, the surgeon then reshapes the cornea using a laser calibrated to the patient's specific needs. Once finished, the flap is laid back down and left to adhere on its own. The entire process generally takes 25 minutes for both eyes.
Both during and after the surgery, patients should feel little to no pain. While vision may be blurred immediately after the surgery as the eyes readjust, most patients see significant improvement within the first six hours, and by 24 hours are 80-85% healed. At approximately three months, vision should be completely stabilized. Surgeons typically prescribe eye drops to aid in the healing process.
Every patient’s initial level of correction varies, but the optimal result of LASIK surgery is 20/20 vision or better. While surgeons cannot guarantee these results, according to Pacific ClearVision Institute, only 1-2% of patients require further enhancements post-surgery.
To get LASIK surgery patients must be referred by their primary eye care doctor. The doctor will run a series of tests and examinations to determine if LASIK is the right treatment option for the patient.
