Historically, opioid painkillers have been the drug of choice, with many people becoming unintentionally hooked after receiving a valid prescription from a physician. In 2010, the five most-prescribed drugs contributed to 588 fatal overdoses or 72-percent of the total. By 2015, the same prescription drugs accounted for just 482, which works out to 59-percent of overdose deaths.
While this sounds like promising news, methamphetamines accounted for 265 deaths last year, or around one-third the total. This represents a 157-percent increase in the past five years alone. At the same time, heroin deaths are soaring, too. In 2012, there were only 12 deaths related to heroin in Oklahoma, but last year there were 31, and experts expect the state to hit at least 40 this year.

“We’re seeing an increase in heroin because of the cost of Oxy,” reports Hal Vorse, an Oklahoma City physician who treats addicts. “I saw a guy today who was doing 300 milligrams a day of oxycodone,” he explained. “That’s a $300- to $400-a-day habit.” The doctor says people who switch to heroin can feed their addictions for about one-third the price, but it may cost them their lives.
Meanwhile, the state is doing little for those who find themselves battling addiction. Oklahoma offers state-funded residential substance abuse treatment for low-income residents, but more than 800 people are presently on a waiting list, hoping for assistance.
