Northpoint Seattle Aims To Spread Knowledge About Dangerous Fentanyl

September 20, 2021 - /PressAdvantage/ - Bellevue, Wash. — Addiction treatment center Northpoint Seattle recently released a blog outlining the purpose of fentanyl and reasons why the United States has found itself within a epidemic because of the drug.
The Washington Department of Health recently reported preliminary data that shows the state lost 418 people in the first three months of 2021 to drug overdoses. Of those, 191 were linked to fentanyl.
Because of this, Northpoint Seattle wants Washington citizens to be more aware of the dangers of fentanyl and what to look out for in someone misusing it.
The blog explains, “Fentanyl is mainly prescribed by doctors who treat cancer patients. It’s usually prescribed in severe situations in which a patient with cancer has ‘breakthrough pain’ despite already being on opioid pain medications related to their cancer. Breakthrough pain is any amount of pain that comes on suddenly and causes issues beyond what the person with cancer is already feeling.”
While fentanyl serves a medical purpose, recreational consumption of the drug is out of control throughout the country. Often, a person does not begin by seeking out fentanyl but instead is dosed with it as it is added to other drugs by street dealers to make the substance more addictive.
Because fentanyl is anywhere from 75 to 100 times more powerful than morphine, it can cause people to become addicted within one single dose.
It does not take much fentanyl to overdose and put a person at risk of dying. The blog explains signs to look for in fentanyl overdose as well. The most common signs of overdose from fentanyl are:
-Drowsiness
-Dizziness
-Confusion
-Slow, shallow breathing or stopped breathing
-Pinpoint pupils
