The idea for creating Dream Baby Dream came about after the members of the dance company at Meeraqi expressed their desire to create a contemporary dance theatre performance on arrival of Irene Fiordilino from Trinity Laban London who co-choreographed the original concept conceived and choreographed by the company head Sahiba Singh, titled Dream Baby Dream …
Dream Baby Dream had been in development for two months and had a team of a dozen working on it, which is considered humongous by industry standards. This goes to show that it takes more than a few great minds to pull something great together.
The contemporary dance theatre performance Dream Baby Dream almost didn’t see the light of day, when there looked like there may have been another product on the market with the same name. The problem was overcome by discovering that the other product was not in the same, i.e., contemporary dance theatre niche.
Meeraqi did something different compared to other businesses in the contemporary dance performance space, by keeping the ticket price very low, it just being Rs 200 for the show.
Dream Baby Dream was released as part of Meeraqi’s greater plans to showcase the expression of imaginations that are abstract and nonlinear yet emotive to the point of making one cry or jump into a laughter riot. Meeraqi Dance Company got it’s start when its Creative Director Sahiba Singh noticed a growing need for combining physical theatre with contemporary dance in order to explore new dimensions of expression and performance in the realm of movement arts. With 10 years prior experience in the contemporary dance world, Sahiba Singh decided to go ahead and start her company in 2017.
Sahiba Singh is quoted saying: “We like to do things to connect with our consumers and customers. Things like publishing a regular newsletter and making occasional courtesy calls to see what more can be done for them, and releasing these little factoids even after Dream Baby Dream hits the market are what make all the difference.”
