August 16, 2022 - /PressAdvantage/ - Lucid Leverage, a reputation management agency in Phoenix, Arizona, is highlighting a recent blog post from Yelp that dispels some of the myths surrounding online reviews and how they do or don’t affect small businesses.
In the blog post, published by Yelp on July 29, 2022, and penned by the company’s Small Business Expert Emily Washcovick, Yelp highlights a statistic from SEO agency Bright Local that found that 77% of consumers “always” or “regularly” read online reviews when looking for local businesses.
The first myth that Yelp challenges, is that making an online profile will expose small businesses to 1-, 2-, or 3-star reviews, affecting their perception in the local community. However, Yelp believes that with the right promotional strategies, businesses can make up for the occasional bad review with a surplus of positive 5-star reviews by providing consistently excellent service.
Next, Yelp says that many business owners believe that it is only worth their time to address the criticisms they get in negative reviews and positive reviews can be safely ignored. Instead, it says that businesses should respond to all reviews, whether positive or negative, as it can help them foster an engaged community around their brand.
Yelp also believes that adding a little personality and flair to review responses by customizing them instead of copy-pasting a standard reply can go a long way towards making customers feel like they are being heard by the business owner. This will be noticed by other potential customers looking at the business’s reviews too.
Finally, Yelp recommends that businesses shouldn’t spend a disproportionate amount of resources on ensuring a squeaky clean 5-out-of-5 online reputation as criticism for the infrequent mistake can always be drowned out by an outpouring of positive reviews.
A spokesperson for Lucid Leverage comments on the recommendations in Yelp’s blog post by saying, “Yelp is one of the biggest review aggregators of its kind. When you look up a local business such as a home improvement services provider, repair technician, or restaurant, its Yelp profile will likely pop up on the first page of Google search results. A company whose content occupies such precious online real estate is of course going to have a lot of useful data that offers deep insights into consumer behavior. So, the opinions expressed in the Yelp blog post, which are backed up by the relevant statistics, should be taken to heart by small business owners who rely on the website to drive traffic. As internet marketing experts with a specialty in reputation management, we wholeheartedly agree with Yelp’s assertions about the influence of online reviews and ask that business owners pay heed to them to increase sales and get a leg up on the local competition."
