Kathryn was born and raised in downtown Hamilton Ontario and moved to Ottawa for University when she was 19. After 5 years of study, Kathryn was awarded summa cum laude, graduating at the top of her class in social sciences at Carleton University where she also worked for the school as a first-in-family student mentor. She became fascinated by sociocultural paradigm shifts; moments in the evolution of societies where institutions had undergone dramatic, fundamental changes. So when she came up with a valid business plan in the summer of 2015, she hoped she could shake up the traditional, money-hungry ways that businesses tend to operate.
It didn’t take long for Kathryn to notice a gap in the market between sustainability and accessibility; eco-friendly “green” products are rarely the most affordable option. She realized that in order for eco-friendly products to be affordable, we need more supply and more demand to take advantage of economies of scale.
Her goal, then, was to create an affordable, attractive, eco-friendly brand. A transparent, down-to-earth company that rewards bulk buying with huge discounts; offers only essential-goods rather than luxuries that fuel materialism; a company that automatically offsets all its operations carbon emissions; and also dedicates some profit with local organizations to solve problems we have in our own backyard – which is why her company’s philanthropic efforts are starting off with helping end period poverty in Canada.
This is just the start, but Kat Plouffe & Only have big plans to keep setting a great example of how a business can both profitably with the health of the planet and its people as a top priority.
