In his current capacity, he serves as the Director of Clinical Pharmacology and Developmental Therapeutics at UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. He also practices at UCI Health -- Costa Mesa.
A 1985 graduate of Rush Medical College, Dr. Fruehauf went on to perform both his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of California, Irvine. He then furthered his training with a fellowship at the National Cancer Institute, which is part of the National Institutes of Health.
Board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology, Dr. Fruehauf is recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Holding an academic appointment, Dr. Fruehauf serves as Professor Emeritus in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine.
Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of blood diseases and cancers such as iron-deficiency anemia, hemophilia, sickle-cell disease, leukemia, and lymphoma.
Carrying out innovative clinical trials to develop new therapies for cancer, Dr. Fruehauf has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed papers in oncology, with his research receiving support from grants provided by the National Cancer Institute.
His various accolades include America's Top Doctors (Bladder Cancer, Melanoma, Medical Oncology, Prostate Cancer), Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., 2013; Consumers Research Council of America Award for Top Oncologist, 2007; March of Dimes Research Award, Commissioned Officers Scientist Training and Extern Program; National Science Foundation Summer Research Award; and Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, Foundation Medical Student Fellowship.
