Director Rich Murray launches Crowdfunding Campaign to complete documentary about 80’s Philly Rocker Alan Mann.

Critically acclaimed music video and film director Rich Murray announced today that he is launching a campaign on the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo to complete his documentary “No Deal No Sleep: The Legend of Alan Mann”.

The film documents the life and music of Alan Mann, the enigmatic Philadelphia musician who wrote and performed the independent holiday hit Christmas on the Block in 1983. The song fostered a music video that has the distinction of being the first video by an unsigned artist ever to play in regular rotation on MTV. Mann passed in 1987 on the eve of signing a long awaited record deal.

Murray, who got his start directing the video has been working on the documentary for several years and describes the process as a “mission”. “It was Alan’s primary stated goal in life to get a record deal and have his music reach a large audience. My mission with this documentary is to make that happen”, said Murray.

The film reconstructs the life of Mann, examines the mysteries surrounding Christmas on the Block, and grapples with the forces that drive artists to be successful – as well as those that destroy them.

Using never-before-seen archival materials, interviews with Alan Mann’s contemporaries, and Murray’s own investigation into the story of Christmas on the Block, “No Deal No Sleep: The Legend of Alan Mann” gives the world a second chance to discover this great, forgotten Philadelphia artist.
