Nearly 30% of the population of the United States have diabetes. Diabetes affects the whole body, not just blood sugar levels. It can affect eye sight, blood pressure, the skin and its ability to heal, and the mouth.
Over time high blood sugar levels can lead to oral health problems. Symptoms to look out for include dry mouth, gum inflammation and oral thrush, which thrives on high sugar levels in people with uncontrolled diabetes. If any of these are spotted it is imperative that patients notify their dentist.
There are many things a patient with diabetes can do to avoid diabetes related dental problems. The first and most important for overall health is to manage the diabetes, keeping blood sugar levels as normal as possible. Brushing after every meal, flossing and rinsing with a antiseptic mouthwash daily helps to avoid problems. Keeping dentures clean and stopping smoking is also advised.
The dental team at Brickwalk Dental stay informed of their patients overall health by reviewing their medical history and they explain that new medications and illnesses, such as diabetes, should be reported as they arise so that they can provide the ultimate care.
