Careers Wiki, the careers advice website, has revealed some surprising statistics about job searching. Their science-backed tips for finding a job help job seekers to understand how to approach their search and what will help or hinder them in finding the right job.
Many people spend a long time working on their resume, and even tailoring it for each job application. However, Careers Wiki's research reveals that 68% of hiring managers spend under two minutes looking at a candidate's resume. When looking through potentially hundreds of applications, they may use their time wisely by scanning for certain keywords. The majority of hiring managers, however, do spend some of their time looking at the social media pages of candidates. 92% will do this to get the information that they need to make a decision.
Some statistics on the recruitment process may not seem to make much sense, although there are often reasonable explanations. For example, candidates are 46% more likely to be invited for a job interview if they submit their application for a role on a Monday, with Friday being the worst day to apply. This might be because hiring managers have more energy on a Monday and are ready to catch up after the weekend, whereas on Fridays, they simply want to go home for the weekend.
First impressions really do count when it comes to interviews. Careers Wiki discovered from their research that a third of interviewers know if they will hire a candidate within the first 90 seconds of an interview. This may seem surprising, but there are many reasons hiring managers might make quick decisions based on initial appearance and demeanor. They might think the candidate is dressed inappropriately, that they failed to maintain eye contact or even that they have a weak handshake. Careers Wiki recommends practicing interview technique to avoid these problems and make a good first impression both visually and personally.
Another perhaps surprising statistic is that having a current job increases the chances of being hired by almost 150%. Many people know that finding a job can be easier when you already have one, but some may still be shocked that it makes a difference of 149%. While this information might not be useful to those who are already unemployed, it can serve as a warning to those who might be considering quitting their current job before finding a new one. It could also be useful for some unemployed people to take any job they may be able to get before applying for those that they really want.
Careers Wiki offers much more advice and further statistics for job searchers to help them find their next career move.
