Owner of Calgary awnings and shade retail business Awnings And More, Jason Smith, says he is proud that Alberta’s first certified passive house is in Calgary.

Calgary being the location of Alberta’s first certified passive house is something to be proud of for all Calgary residents, Jason Smith, CEO of awning and shade retail business Awnings And More, says.

A house in the northwest of Calgary is the first in the province to receive certification from the Passive House Institute, which, as the CBC reports, is the gold standard for sustainability in housing.

Passive houses do not have furnaces or use any kind of natural gas resources for heating. They are specially built with extra thick walls, highly insulated windows and concrete floors that absorb passive solar energy for heating. This all allows them to use up to 90 percent less energy than a traditional house and eschew the use of a furnace, even when the temperature is freezing outside in the middle of winter. In case the house gets too cold — like when the temperature gets down below -30 C and the sky is grey for prolonged periods of time, blocking out sunshine — electronic radiators will kick in and heat the house temporarily.

While there is only one certified passive house in Calgary’s EchoHaven development, none of the 25 houses there use natural gas services and they’re all built to be at least 30 percent more efficient than the current Alberta housing standards, making the entire neighbourhood more energy efficient than average.

Smith says seeing these types of developments pop up in Calgary is a good indicator of how the demand for sustainable houses has grown.

“It’s great to see Calgary housing heading in a more sustainable direction in general,” Smith said. “Passive houses are a good start. Seeing these new developments built with a focus on sustainability is refreshing. A shift towards sustainability is actually good news for a company like Awnings And More. While a lot of focus is put on houses using energy for heating, it shouldn’t be forgotten that Calgary has hot summers and homeowners also use energy for cooling. People looking to use less energy in the summer can turn to awnings and shades to keep their houses cool without having to resort to air conditioning.”
