4th Annual Spring for the Heart Fish Fry & More Benefit Set for April 3, 2020 at Irish Club Of Dayton Banquet Hall

March 02, 2020 - /PressAdvantage/ - (DAYTON, Ohio) KAP for the Heart was established in memory of 23 year-old Kieran Popp who passed away on September 3, 2015 from a Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Kieran passed away sometime between 1:30 and 6:30 am. Kieran’s family was unaware that he had a fatal heart disease that could have been treated.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. It affects more than 356,000 people each year—including 7,000 youth under age 18 and unfortunately, only one in every 10 victims survives. The survival rate has remained at about 10 percent for 30 years because the public is not as prepared as it could be to help save lives.

“When sudden cardiac arrest occurs, it’s vital for people nearby to call 911, start CPR and use an AED, if one is available,” said Mary M. Newman, MS, President of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation. “In fact, the chance of survival can triple when victims receive immediate care from bystanders.” What’s more, she said, “Since about 70 percent of cardiac arrests occur in the home, chances are bystanders will be called upon to help someone they know and love.”

KAP For the Heart is dedicated to bringing awareness about the importance of heart health in youth and young adults. We promote a proactive approach to heart conditions to prevent of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in youth. The long term goal of the foundation is to provide assistance to cardiac patients who are in need of support for daily tasks and/or financial assistance for medications and proper treatment. “Kieran was a normal, seemingly healthy 23 year-old,” said Jeanene Popp, Founder of the Foundation and Kieran’s mother. “I now know that this sort of thing is not rare, and we are working hard to raise awareness and institute cardiac screening programs for children in the local community.”

Kieran had a condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, which is excessive thickening of the heart muscle, which can often be detected by a well-read electrocardiogram (ECG). “While he had be excessively tired we believed it was a symptom of narcolepsy, with which he was diagnosed at the age of 19. I had no idea that sudden cardiac arrest was even a possibility,” said Jeanene.

KAP for the Heart will host its fourth annual Spring for the Heart Fish Fry & More! Benefit on April 3, 2020 from 6 p.m. to 11p.m. at the Irish Club of Dayton Banquet Hall, 6555 Dog Leg Rd., Dayton, Ohio 45414. Tickets are available through Eventbrite.
