Myanmar army ordered to take offensive against Arakan Army

Jan 19, 2019

NAYPYITAW, Myanmar — Myanmar's military announced Friday that the Arakan Army, a Buddhist rebel group in Rakhine state, has been classified a terrorist organization after mounting a flurry of recent attacks. The state earlier was the site of a brutal counterinsurgency campaign by the military against the Muslim Rohingya minority, causing more than 700,000 to flee to neighboring Bangladesh. Military officers said at a news conference in the capital, Naypyitaw, that leader Aung San Suu Kyi ordered security forces to launch the offensive against the Arakan Army. The insurgent group, which seeks autonomy from the central government, killed 13 police...

Thai military chief urges loyalty ahead of expected election

Jan 19, 2019

BANGKOK — Thailand's military held its annual Armed Forces Day parade on Friday as the country prepares for expected elections more than four years after soldiers overthrew an elected government. Army Commander in Chief Gen. Apirat Kongsompong, who presided over the ceremony, declined last October to rule out future army interventions in Thai political life, raising a storm of controversy. But his speech to soldiers on Friday steered clear of politics, making instead routine exhortations of loyalty to the king and the country. "We will sacrifice our physical and mental strength to protect the country and revere the king, and...

Indonesia leader to free radical cleric behind Bali bombings

Jan 19, 2019

JAKARTA, Indonesia — The ailing 80-year-old radical cleric who inspired the Bali bombers and other violent extremists in Indonesia will be released from prison, Indonesia's president said Friday, slashing a 15-year sentence. The announcement of Abu Bakar Bashir's imminent release came during campaigning for a presidential election due in April in which opponents of President Joko Widodo have tried to discredit him as insufficiently Islamic. "I have considered this decision for a long time, involving the National Police chief and legal experts," Widodo told reporters. "This release was decided because of humanitarian considerations and also related to his health care."...

Heavy smog, worsened by weather, raises alarm across Asia

Jan 19, 2019

BANGKOK — Unusually high levels of smog worsened by weather patterns are raising alarm across Asia, with authorities in Thailand's hazy capital Bangkok handing out face masks and preparing to seed clouds for rain to clear the air. A combination of construction dust, auto exhaust and other pollutants, lingering over Bangkok due to prevailing weather patterns, has taken air quality to unhealthy levels in recent days. "I admit these are temporary solutions but we have to do it. Other long term measures will also be implemented, Police Gen. Aswin Kwanmuang told a meeting of army, police, pollution control and other...

Huge crowd of Filipino Catholics gathers amid terror fears

Jan 19, 2019

MANILA, Philippines — A mammoth crowd of mostly barefoot Filipino Catholics joined a raucous procession Wednesday of a centuries-old black statue of Jesus Christ despite terrorism fears and amid the president's attacks on the Catholic faith. Police said they have not monitored any specific threat but that they deployed more than 9,000 police and troops, including bomb squads backed by a surveillance helicopter, to secure the annual procession of the wooden Black Nazarene along Manila's streets. Police were expecting up to 5 million people to join the dawn-to-midnight procession. More than 800,000 devotees attended a Mass and the first few...
